I can’t forget what my friend said to me just now as we were leaving office together. I even SMS-ed her after we separated saying that I will forever remember what she said to me just now.
Both of us have to work overtime as we have our own task that needs to be done before leaving. (And as usual, when there is one thing to do, two more tasks will be flooding in at the same time. And when I’m free, I will be sitting there and wait for a fly to swat at. Although it makes my heart sad that there are none in my office.)
As usual, she would usually have a lady’s sling bag to keep her personal belonging and carries a laptop bag with her other hand. Me? I have a backpack to carry and my water bottle that I carry with one of my hands. Just like most companies, we have to tag ourselves out and open the door. Seeing her that she is overloaded, I voluntarily walked one or two steps ahead of her and open the door for her.
We head on to 7-Eleven first as she needed some change to pay for her parking. She took a packet of Tetra-Pak GOODDAY milk and walk to the counter to pay while I wait for her at the entrance of the 7-Eleven.
Seeing that her hand is now full (one laptop bag in one hand, the other shoulder her lady’s bag and the other hand with a packet of newly bought milk), I voluntarily open the door for her to walk through. As ahead of us there is another door, she said “Never mind, I will open it myself.” I looked at her and I thought she is joking, so I opened the door for her. Then, she said something that I can’t believe that she would say.
SHE: “I can open the door myself. I’m not a handicap person, you know?”
ME: O.O! “But your hands are full. One with laptop and another with your milk.”
SHE: “You are like treating me as if I’m a rich young miss (you are my servant).”
ME: O.O! “If that is the case, I would be carrying your laptop right now.”
SHE: “I wouldn’t allow you to carry it. If I do, it seems that I am like a handicap person.”
ME: O.O! **speechless due to shock** **hitting my chest** **shaking my head**
Oh yeah! In such a circumstances, she would still refuse my help. For me, it is just a small matter and if I were in her position, I would be glad if I can receive some help even though it is just with the door. She is cute, isn’t she?
For the record, I’m offering my help to her not because I’m discriminating her (because of gender or because she is weak etc.). But it’s because that is just me. I usually open the door for all my friends and colleagues. And I usually like to stand at the back of the pack. And if I see a stranger that needs help with the door, I would just open it and wait for them to step through it. Because what I see is that someone is in need of help and that is something that I can help. And opening a door and let someone pass is just a small matter.
For me, I’m still shaking my head right now. I don’t think I will forget this for the rest of my life. Now, she doesn’t have to worry on the question of not getting people to remember what she did. Coz I will remember. Thank you for playing a significant role in my life! LOL!
