From The Eyes of An Observer

I Observed and I Comment!

I’ve grew up listening to Boyzone. I love their music so much even today.

The first time I heard their songs was when I was aged 12. It was their first two singles “Love Me For A Reason” and “Coming Home Now” from their first album “Said and Done”. I love their music beat even as of now. I remembered I heard their songs when my parents purchased two compilation albums that contains their songs. (Couldn’t remember the compilation album").

Their next music video, “A Different Beat” spur my interest in this band that I hardly know. But the music was soothing to my ears. I just know that I had to get their album. Then on one fine day when I was at a shopping complex, I saw their second album “A Different Beat” on display. Although hesitated, I picked up the cassette and walked to the counter to purchase the album with my limited sum of pocket money. But I never regretted ever since then. I love that album so much that I listened to it every night before I go to bed for a few months. Even I made the purchase of their second edition of “A Different Beat” album, which has a number of new songs.

Then I managed to find their first album “Said and Done” when I was browsing at a music store. I bought it without any hesitation. Another wise choice I made. My love for their music keeps on growing. But sadly, they were still not popular in Malaysia then.

Unable to contain my love for their music, I’ve introduced their songs to my secondary school classmates when I was 14. Me, a good boy, doing illegal things in school. How? By bringing a cassette tape to school. One thing’s for sure though: I would definitely cry if it was confiscated. But the culprit that I loaned to was the evening shift head prefect. So, perhaps it’s safe as he can hid it in the Prefect Board Room. :D

Their popularity in Malaysia got a big boost thanks to their song “Picture of You” featured on Mr. Bean’s movie, Mr Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie. Their song became an instant success. Even my brother who was 3 years old then love the music video. And as a result, my parents bought the soundtrack without even me forking the money. :D

Their third album, “Where We Belong” was a big hit and soon, many of my classmates bought the album. We even sang a few songs while walking to the bus stand on one fine day which is about 500 metres away. And guess who started it? It was the prefect whom I borrowed the cassettes to. So, a bunch of kids singing together happily and having a blast, walking to the bus stand. Thinking back about it now just brought back one of the rare sweet memories that I could remember about my teenage years.

Boyzone’s popularity and their hit singles keeps on growing until they had 16 hit singles that Top Five of UK chart. Then comes the news of them decided to get some time off from one another. It was a heart shattering moment for me to hear that my favourite boy band is calling it quits, even though it was temporary. But glad that they say that they will perform together again the future.

7 years later, they are together. But today, only four of them remains. It was sad for me to find out that Stephen Gately passed away at age 33 yesterday (on 11th October). I got the news when I got connected to the Internet right before I went to bed.

Here are a few songs that was sung mainly by Stephen. I managed to find these from YouTube.

I’m sure majority of us know this song: Shooting Star - Boyzone

Here’s another one that was less popular: Key To My Life - Boyzone

Stephen, you will be greatly missed by your family, your band mates, your friends and of course the fans from all around the world.
