…. and I can still can sometimes remember it clearly. It just shows how deep is my desire to be back there. Possibly to settle down or work or for holiday. I just want to be back to UK. This is not the first time I state my desire. But this desire did not only limited to me only. Even some of my friends who was in the same batch of me during our short stint in UK wants to return there. Some has journeyed there for holiday. And those who were lucky were able to get a job there.
Yesterday, while I was concentrating on my work, the voice of the Sheffield Train Station announcer was playing on my head. “The train to Meadowhall will be arriving at Platform ….. in ………”. I can still remember it clearly. He had such a confident air that you can sense when you hear his words. I found his voice to be charming and sexy. I wonder whether his voice is still heard on the PA system?
Of all places, why the Sheffield Train Station? It was a nostalgic place to me. First was because my English name was formed there on my first day in England. My friends said that I need a name that would be easier for the English saints to remember. After a few minutes, they felt that David was suitable for me. They say they chose that name for me based on King David, the King of Israel, the chosen one by God. What a pressure they put on me. Sad to say that I did not leave up that name.
The gang who gave me my name. From left to right: Anna, Enouch, Grace, the slimmed-down me, two Alex(es), followed by Ezra and Soo Chee. The distinct similarity that we had were that all of us are wearing specs.
Another thing that made the train station so nostalgic was that we have to cross through it to get to our university from our hostel. Our hostel was only located uphill which is a few hundred metres away from the university and it happens that the train station is in the middle of the way. Hence, we have to walk downhill to the train station and cross over it using their pedestrian bridge to the main gate of the train station. And if it is early in the morning, we will pick up a free copy of newspaper along the way. Sometimes, I would just stop at the convenience store to buy some chips.
Also, every weekend, we would just use the train services to travel to Nottingham for Lord’s table. Usually we would depart after Saturday lunch and returned the next day. The train journey from Sheffield to Nottingham takes about an hour or so (if not mistaken).
I just also remembered that we waited for our bus to travel around Scotland outside the main entrance at 4 or 5 in the morning. It was very very cold in UK. Imagine that we have to camp outside to wait for the bus to arrive. That was a total madness. Then there was the trip to Meadowhall and York via train as well.
I miss those days. Times fly by so fast that it has already been four years since the photo above was taken. A lot of things has changed since then. Everyone was off and about doing something that they liked. We only had a picture of this to remind us that our life has crossed with each other. It will be one of the great memories that I will cherish in my heart.
