The Right Values

I’ve just finished listening to an interview given by Jim Wallis, the CEO of the social-justice organization Sojourners, to McKinsey Quarterly. Not only it was inspiring, but it did point out what one important thing that is lacking with people these days: the right values.

Everyone has their own framework of values that they live with. But have we all spend time to think about it more? Well, honestly, I don’t. The values that was embedded to me was a result of my upbringing by my parents and family as well as encounters with friends and acquaintances. I am what I am today because of these people. And fortunately, I wasn’t a let down to a lot of people.

But imagine that I did let them down and that they dislike me because of who I am now, do I blame these people for shaping me wrongly? No, they are not. Nor are they to be praised for the good things you received. Why is that so? Because we have to power to alter the right values that we live in.

Take ten minutes of your time to think this through: what are the right values that you want to live with? You can list as much as you can. You are in control of your life. You are in the driving seat. Only you can decide which path to take. The right values or the wrong ones. The path of kindness vs the path of greed. The path of love and compassion vs the path of hatred. The list goes on.

So, what are your right values?
