Culture. That’s the word that you would hear at least once if you were to sit with me and my colleagues every morning for breakfast. Of course, the word would only come out when we are discussing about character.
Usually, the word would be popped up as a defensive mechanism against the negative characters of individuals/community that we were discussing. No malicious harm intended. After all, human operates within a conformed set of rules established by society. And at times, culture is acceptable to one particular segment of society but is not in another.
Let’s take eating for example. Westerners deemed that eating loudly as rude. But the Japanese will consider it as the food not to be delicious and is a disgrace to the chefs. One similar action but two different sets of interpretation.
But I have a question on my mind about culture. Is culture an evolution of addiction and habitual behaviour that is able to spread throughout the society and has been passed down from one generation to another generation? Let’s open this up for debate.
Here is my argument. Imagine this: In a urban society, the presence of act of random kindness or friendliness seems to be diminished as opposed to those living in the outskirts of the city. So, there is basically an absence of trust due to experience he/her might have gone through. And if it spreads among other individuals within the society, it will become a habit or a norm.
So, what are your thoughts?
