Skeptical

The other morning, during my routine breakfast with my friends, we had a friendly debate. Though I can honestly say that there were three of us who are annoyed by the other person’s characteristic. How I wish that a knife would just suddenly pop out of the air so that I can stab him before I got a heart attack.

Well, typically, he’s just very skeptical (also known as pessimistic). And if you sprinkle some ‘kiasu’ (scared of failure) element in there, you will get an annoying individual. Trust me! You wouldn’t want this sort of people opposing you in any argument. It just makes your life shorter. Just like how he did to mine. But thanks to him, I learned about one thing: never ever argue with a pessimistic individual.

No. Honestly, I learned a lot from him. It might be applicable to majority of pessimistic individuals out there.….. but I could be wrong too.

Well, for one, he is darn afraid of change. He is someone who prefers to live in an environment where the likelihood of changes would be low. So, he prefers to be stagnant. You can bypass him if you are looking for positive candidate for promotion. Why? Because he doesn’t dare to take any decision. He sees it that it is not his business, hence, his boss should make the decision instead of him. Little did he know that it could cost him his job if his boss decides to lay off some worker.

I think he would only take risk if he has a crystal ball that allows him to see the future. (Time Machine? He wouldn’t dare to step into it. I believe he would be skeptical when it comes to safety issues for new or uncommon inventions.) Then, he might be taking his chances (doesn’t it constitute as cheating as you already knew the outcome by looking up the answer displayed on the crystal ball? ) Hence, you could say that he is someone that likes to lay around in the current situation rather than doing something that focuses on the future. Seriously, he knows the problem or an issue, but he never think or considers solution to rectify it. For example, he complains about a weakness in the education system that could have an adverse impact to his kids but he doesn’t want to take the necessary action to rectify the problem.

From the previous paragraph, I could say that he is not going to improve himself even though he can. I’m not referring to inability to buy new house or car. I’m referring to him taking action that would be beneficial for his character development. He’s bordering to a conservative. But the reason that I don’t label him as ultra conservative is because he knows how to drive a car and knows how to use a PC. Yes, I’m just exaggerating.

Well, he is not that bad at all. I would prefer having people like him if I’m a business owner. It’s hard to find someone who would execute their work obediently. And it is good to be skeptical. It’s a defensive weapon against liars and cheaters.

It’s not that I’m against him. He is a friend. Just that I prefer him not to be overly skeptical. Sometimes, he shut himself from receiving brilliant ideas and sometimes constructive criticism. But I can’t change him and as a friend I have to accept all the good and bad there is about him. It’s in the package. ;)

Everyone has their own set of opinions and some find it hard to accept the opinions of others. Then again, it's hard to say who's right and who's wrong as well. "Chicken and egg" situation I guess.
